Importing a Classic Car to Qatar

Two of the numbers that decide your landed cost are already settled: import duty and VAT. The third, whether a classic or antique car gets any age-based exemption at all, is not, and it applies the same way whether the car ends up in Doha, Lusail or Al Shahaniya.
We handle the logistics end to end: pre-purchase inspection abroad, marine insurance, shipping through Hamad Port, customs clearance and Istimara registration. This page sets out what is confirmed, what is not, and what each step costs.
5% duty, no VAT, and one open question
Import duty is 5% ad valorem on CIF value under the GCC Customs Union, confirmed via Invest Qatar, the government's own investment promotion agency, and regulated by the General Authority of Customs. VAT does not apply at all: Qatar has not implemented it as of September 2026, despite committing under the 2016 GCC VAT framework to an eventual minimum 5% rate. A draft e-invoicing law approved in May 2026 looks like groundwork for VAT eventually arriving, but no law is in force and no date has been announced.
The open question is age. Standard light-vehicle imports are generally capped at 5 years old from manufacture, 10 years for heavy vehicles. Whether a classic or antique exception exists is genuinely unresolved: two import-policy pages we checked directly state no exception at all, while other secondary sources claim a 35-year antique-vehicle exemption. This is the single most important thing to confirm before you commit to shipping a classic into Qatar, and we recommend doing it directly with the Traffic Department or a licensed Qatari customs broker rather than taking either version at face value.
Once a car is legally in the country, registration runs through the same Istimara process as any other vehicle, via the Ministry of Interior's General Directorate of Traffic, with a mandatory Fahes technical inspection beforehand. Qatar has no distinct classic-vehicle plate or insurance product that we could find, unlike the UAE's dedicated Classic plate: the regulatory picture here reads as less developed and more uncertain than the UAE's until someone can point us to a confirming source. Read how importing into the UAE works for comparison, or see our import services overview for all four markets.
Getting the car to Hamad Port: container, RoRo or air
Hamad Port, launched in 2017, is Qatar's main seaport and handles both RoRo and containerized vehicle cargo. 2024 figures show 130,684 vehicles moved through RoRo, up 62% year on year, alongside 1.46 million TEU of container throughput. Vendor-quoted transit times from the US run roughly 25 to 40 days depending on departure port.
The same logic applies here as across the rest of the Gulf: container for anything you would call irreplaceable, RoRo for a car that just needs to get from A to B. Read our container vs RoRo shipping guide before you decide, particularly if the car does not run under its own power. All imported vehicles must pass Fahes technical inspection as part of Istimara registration; we found no classic-specific exception in that step either.
| Method | Best for | Tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| Enclosed container | High-value or non-running classics | Higher cost, but the car is sealed away from weather, salt air and handling risk for the whole voyage |
| RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) | Running, road-legal cars | Cheaper and Hamad Port's higher-volume option, but the car is driven on and off and exposed in transit |
| Air freight | Time-critical or exceptional-value cars | By far the fastest, and priced accordingly, rarely justified for a routine import |

Get an import quoteHow the process runs, start to finish
We treat the age-exemption question as unresolved for every car until a broker confirms it in writing for that specific vehicle. The process itself runs in five stages:
- Pre-purchase inspection abroad, before any money changes hands
- Marine insurance for the voyage itself
- Shipping via Hamad Port, container or RoRo depending on the car's value and condition
- Customs clearance handled by a licensed broker who can confirm the current age-exemption position directly with the Traffic Department
- Fahes technical inspection and Istimara registration on arrival
Costs: fixed, and quoted per car
5% duty on CIF value is fixed and confirmed. No VAT applies, for now. Everything else, freight, marine insurance, the broker's fee and Fahes inspection costs, is quoted per car and route, depending on the vehicle's declared value, origin port and condition. We do not publish placeholder figures for these: once we know the car, we get real numbers from our shipping and customs contacts rather than a generic estimate. If you are weighing Qatar against a market with a larger dealer network, our classic cars for sale in Qatar listings show what is already trading locally.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a classic car age exemption for importing into Qatar?
It is unresolved. Two import-policy pages we checked directly state there is no exemption at all, while other secondary sources describe a 35-year antique-vehicle exemption. Confirm the current position directly with the Traffic Department or a licensed Qatari customs broker before you plan around either version.
Does Qatar charge VAT on an imported classic car?
No. Qatar has not implemented VAT as of September 2026, though it committed under the 2016 GCC VAT framework to an eventual minimum 5% rate and approved a draft e-invoicing law in May 2026 as apparent groundwork. There is no VAT law in force and no announced implementation date.
What is the standard import duty for a car brought into Qatar?
5% ad valorem on the CIF value, confirmed via Invest Qatar and regulated by the General Authority of Customs under the GCC Customs Union. This applies regardless of the car's age.
Does Qatar issue a special plate for classic cars, the way the UAE does?
No. Standard Istimara registration applies regardless of a vehicle's age, and we found no distinct classic-vehicle plate or classic-specific insurance product in Qatar. The regulatory picture here is less developed than the UAE's dedicated Classic plate system, at least until a clearer source says otherwise.
