Doha's classic car calendar, and the museum that isn't open yet

Two fixtures anchor the scene: the FBQ Car Museum as the permanent collection and the Qatar Luxury Classic Car Competition and Exhibition as the annual show, held under the patronage of Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani. Around 40% of the cars at the 2025 exhibition arrived from other GCC countries, which tells you something real about this market: Doha hosts the event, but the cars, and often the buyers, circulate across the whole Gulf.

Mawater City, a mainstream marketplace covering 200 or more dealerships, is worth naming only to rule out: it deals in everyday cars, not classics.

Registration, and a 35-year exemption nobody has confirmed

The Ministry of Interior's General Directorate of Traffic handles Istimara registration, and Fahes, run by WOQOD Vehicles Inspection, carries out the mandatory technical inspection every car needs regardless of age. No distinct classic-vehicle registration category exists: an antique car and a daily driver go through the identical process.

Standard light-vehicle imports are generally capped at 5 years old from manufacture, 10 for heavy vehicles. Whether a classic or antique exception exists is genuinely unresolved: two import-policy pages we checked state no exception at all, while other secondary sources claim a 35-year antique-vehicle exemption. This is the single most important open question for bringing a car into Qatar; confirm directly with the Traffic Department or a licensed broker before committing to a shipment.

Duty, and Qatar's no-VAT position

Import duty is 5% ad valorem on CIF value under the GCC Customs Union, confirmed through Invest Qatar, the government's own investment promotion agency.

On tax, Qatar is the regional outlier among the four markets we cover: no VAT at all, as of September 2026. Qatar committed under the 2016 GCC VAT Framework Agreement to an eventual minimum 5% rate, and approved a draft e-invoicing law in May 2026 as groundwork, but no VAT law is in force and no date has been announced. Unlike the UAE's Classic plate, Qatar has no distinct classic-vehicle registration category or classic-specific insurance product we could find; its regulatory picture reads less developed, and more uncertain, than the UAE's until an official source confirms otherwise.
