The R34 spent years as the car enthusiasts argued about instead of drove: import age restrictions kept most of the world's clean, Japan-market examples out of reach. That is changing. In enough markets now, including much of the Gulf, the R34 is old enough to import properly, and it is doing so as a genuine youngtimer favourite rather than a curiosity.
Nissan built it from January 1999 to November 2002, plus a separate limited Z-Tune run from 2003 to 2007, around the twin-turbo RB26DETT engine, officially rated at 276 horsepower under Japan's manufacturers' gentlemen's agreement, with real output over 330 horsepower. A 6-speed Getrag manual and Nissan's ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system round out a car that was always more sophisticated than its badge suggested.
Nissan Skyline R34 price in 2026
This is the widest, most variant-driven price spread of any model we cover. A standard V-Spec in good-to-excellent driver condition, in the US or wider import market, runs roughly $120,000 to $250,000, as of 2026 market range. Clean, pre-export Japan-domestic examples can still be found for $55,000 to $105,000 before import costs.
Special and rare editions trade far above the standard range: V-Spec II runs $200,000 to $250,000, M-Spec $180,000 to $300,000, Midnight Purple $300,000 to $400,000, Nur editions $350,000 to $675,000, and the ultra-limited Nismo Z-Tune $1.5 million to $2 million. Confirm the exact factory variant designation against build documentation before paying any of these premiums. See the wider field on classic cars for sale if you are weighing this against other icons.

The RB26DETT rewards a careful pre-purchase inspection more than almost anything else on this list, because its failure modes are well known and expensive. Go through:
- Oil pump drive collar, the single best-known RB26DETT weak point: it typically fails around 60,000 to 80,000 miles and can cause catastrophic engine failure. Demand documentation it has been replaced.
- Ceramic turbine wheels on the stock twin-turbo setup crack above about 18psi boost. Steel-wheel upgrades run $8,000 or more installed.
- ATTESA E-TS transfer pump and Super-HICAS rear-steer rack: both commonly age and develop leaks.
- Getrag transmission synchros: second-gear grinding or refusal to engage is a known failure symptom.
- Compression and leak-down test: sub-150psi readings signal an imminent, expensive rebuild.
- Import and history verification: confirm genuine Japanese auction-sheet history and odometer consistency.
- Confirm the genuine factory variant designation, V-Spec, V-Spec II, M-Spec or Nur, against build documentation before paying the associated premium.
Ownership reality
Budget for a car that is getting harder to support, not easier. Factory NOS parts supply is diminishing, and specialty components including turbos, ATTESA electronics and transfer-case parts are often still sourced through Japanese specialists or importers rather than off the shelf locally.
Annual maintenance is commonly cited at $3,000 to $6,000, treat this as an estimate to confirm against the specific car's condition and location, and a full engine rebuild runs around $20,000 to $25,000 if the oil pump collar or turbos have already let go. This is not a car to run without a specialist relationship already in place before you buy.
Buying and selling privately
In the UAE specifically, R34s can be made street-legal if they are unmodified and retrofitted with catalytic converters. Dubai's RTA generally handles JDM right-hand-drive imports under classic or vintage permits, commonly benchmarked around 30 years old, with some case-by-case recognition closer to 25, and many cars are converted to left-hand-drive for standard registration. Import costs are cited around 12% customs duty plus 10% agency fees, on top of shipping.
Most genuine, documented R34s change hands privately, between buyers and sellers who already trust each other's paperwork, rather than through open listings. Photos, auction-sheet history and inspection reports for specific cars are available on request via WhatsApp. See classic cars for sale in the UAE for current market context, or compare it against another analog performance icon in the BMW E30 M3 or its own predecessor in spirit, the Datsun 240Z.
